Hey everyone, I've started this thread so that we can at least meet other C. pagurus researchers and potentially facilitate some collaborative works. If not then we have a place to come and express our love/hate/ambivalence for the mighty Brown crab! I'll start! I'm Jodie and I'm a C. pagurus addict. I like size at maturity studies and long walks on the beach. But seriously... I'm working at Bangor University as a postdoctoral researcher in the Fisheries and Conservation Science Group.I'm responsible for collecting baseline data on the C. pagurus fishery in Welsh waters. I undertake lots of CPUE, length frequency, growth and habitat use data in Welsh waters. This winter (2014) I and many others are doing a broad scale size at maturity study - if you want in then message me ASAP. Please respond to this thread and introduce yourself! Also if you want to discuss anything privately my work contact is j.haig@bangor.ac.uk

Thanks for doing this Jodie. It should be good to have a place where we can all interact. Paul

Hello Jodie (and everybody). Great initiative with the forum! Short about me: I`m Snorre and I`m a researcher at Moereforsking, Aalesund, Norway and a prospective Ph.d. student starting my work on C. pagurus this autumn. I therefore have a special interest in this species, but find physiology and biology of most marine species with a hard shell covering some soft tissues interesting In my Ph.d. I will look at biology and eco-physiology and North to South variation in Norwegian waters.

Hello everyone,
Slightly late to the party but better late then never!
Im Matt I work for the Orkney Islands Inshore Fishery group.
We currently have a four year project investigating the spatial overlap between different marine users specifically marine renewable sites and creel fishermen. As part of this project we are collecting baseline data on brown crab, lobster and velvet crabs, feeding into our own stock assessments for the region and a voluntary logbook scheme.
I am responsable currently for collecting this base line data in addition to morphometrics on Lobsters investigating MLS and through involvement with Jodie will be leading the brown crab sampling in November - December 2014.
Other research that I am also currently undertaking is investigating Juvenile lobster habitat preference experiments with larger artificial habitat structures schedules to be deployed at sea in summer 2015 (dependant on the success of the lab experiments... ), if people are generally curious about how this is going im happy to start a thread to keep people informed on its progress!
Matt

Hi there,
Even later to the party, fashionably late I say!
I'm Robin, I work in the Shellfish Team at Cefas. My species of focus are whelk and, you guessed it, the wonderful brown crab.
We have a couple of crab projects running at the moment.
One is a desk based project looking at improving our estimates of natural mortality from existing datasets (to feed into our current stock assessments), and to gain an understanding of incidental mortality from other gear.
The second is the PIECRUST project (Practical indicators of exploitation for crustacean species - specifically C. pagurus and H. gammarus). This project is looking at developing methods for creating pre-recruit indices. These methods include larval light trap, intertidal, experimental (fine mesh) pot and commercial pot surveys. In addition to this we are looking at ways of improving our estimates of growth using a semi-captive experiment.
Rob
Merry Christmas all!

Hi everyone! What a cool idea for a forum My name is Charlotte and I have just handed in my PhD at Swansea University. I am a disease ecologist and have mainly worked on H. gammarus but am also currently working on a few things crab-related! I was part of a 2 year survey (2010/2011) in the Lundy Island MCZ looking at disease in C. pagurus and H. gammarus. For these surveys we also monitored CPUE, size, sex, condition etc. - anything interesting! My email is cedavies72@gmail.com if anyone would like to chat (I believe my Swansea one will soon be discontinued so best to use my personal one for now) Charlotte PS. For informal and (sometimes) interesting crustacean-related tweets... my twitter is @_CharlotteEve_

Hi all,
I agree, good idea for a forum. My name is Dan, currently an RA at Newcastle Uni; studying lobsters, but also crabs from time to time.
Completed a PhD 'abundance, interaction and movement of a European lobster stock'. I've conducted many tagging studies of lobster/crabs, including a few years of Capture-Mark-Recapture (adapted Jolly-Seber) to determine densities, movements, mortality, catchability... I also study how traps effectively catch animals; camera work, interactions between/within species, trapping area/overlap, trap saturation, habitat influence etc. (the downfalls of CPUE, sorry)... Recently I've started using acoustic telemetry to track lobsters, hopefully this summer will get to strap a few tags to crabs too!
Email: daniel.j.skerritt@gmail.com I also tweet @danhomarus
Thanks

Hi everyone,
I have recently completed my PhD at Aberystwyth University and, as part of this work, I investigated the population structuring of the brown crab. I have recently been in touch with Jodie (admin) and was told of this site. If anyone is interested to know more, prior to the publications going out, then I am happy for you to contact me on: hayley.v.watson@googlemail.com
My population genetics work involved both microsatellite analysis and RADsequencing of brown crab in the Irish Sea and NE Atlantic waters.
I look forward to some interesting discussions on this forum.
All the best,
Hayley
