Hey everyone,
As part of the size of maturity study occurring across the UK we're collecting a lot of genetic material as well.
Currently we don't have the funds to do anything exciting with them but we are very interested in applying for funds to do something with them in the future.
We don't want to double up on any work that is already being done. Genetics is expensive and there are lots of people out there doing some excellent work already.
Can anyone respond to this thread with genetic work that they know is happening, or genetic work that needs to be done that isn't.
Additionally if you have the funds and are interested in putting together a molecular project for Cancer pagurus we can discuss an arrangement where we provide the samples.
CURRENT MOLECULAR WORK ON C.PAGURUS I AM AWARE OF:
A taxonomic study placing C.pagurus in with other crustaceans around the world
A mitochondrial population connectivity study - little structure around the UK, this study is complete
A microsatellite study - I don't know much about the scope of this study but I'm sure the author can fill us in
A RAD marker study - fine scale connectivity and genes under selection - as far as I know this study is complete or near completion
WHAT I THOUGHT OUR SAMPLES MIGHT BE GOOD FOR:
100 individuals from geographically distant populations.
Might be useful for an effect population size study, or combined with near shore juvenile samples a recruitment study which could also be combined with some larval dispersal modelling (as we have the expertise at Bangor and the models available already).
Any other ideas / collaborations are very welcome!
oh, and Merry Christmas everyone!
Jodie
